UNDP draws on the DGP-Net (dgp-net@groups.undp.org), a global network of democratic governance practitioners to provide timely and high-quality advice, expertise and know-how to policy makers and other partners in the countries where we operate – helping them pursue the best possible development solutions. The DGP-Net promotes local, national, regional and global knowledge creation, sharing and application. It works as a global exchange forum to inform more than 2000 practice members of the new and upcoming practice initiatives, innovations, and, knowledge resources available within UNDP’s Democratic Governance Community of Practice, and as a tool for sharing comparative experiences, good practices; lessons learned, and discussion of substantive issues related to governance. UNDP also supported the establishment of partners’ networks based on the UNDP model through the DGP-Net.You can  find out more about DGP-Net on the network brochure page.

The DGP-Net promotes a “virtuous circle” model by which policy informs practice, and practice informs policy, and enables global knowledge sharing in line with the philosophy expressed by Kemal Dervis, UNDP Administrator: “UNDP is a global organization. And I believe this is one of our sources of strength and something we have to preserve. Preserve in the sense that the knowledge, the communication, has to be at the global level…Africa should have access to global knowledge and south Asia should participate in that. People in Africa, in Mozambique, should know what is happening in Indonesia, what is happening in Brazil.”

DGP-Net: 10 YEARS OF KNOWLEDGE SHARING
The DGP-Net – along with UNDP’s other knowledge networks - has done a great deal to help UNDP overcome barriers to sharing knowledge, experience and ideas, and helped cultivate a spirit of peer assistance and problem-solving.

In 10 years the DGP-Net has responded to thousands of queries and requests for assistance from the COs, Regional Centers, Sub-Regional Resource Facilities and partner agencies. Such substantive and operational supports came in the form of Consolidated Replies, News Updates, DG Insights, Case Studies, Lessons Learned, and, Collection of Good and, ‘Not so Good’ Practices. The frequent ranking of the DGP-Net as top UNDP practice network in ‘UNDP HQ Products and Services Survey’ amply testified to this. The DGP-Net contributed fundamentally to the gradual change of organizational culture from hierarchy driven vertical knowledge sharing to community driven horizontal knowledge sharing.

Strengthening Community of Practice: A Strategic Agenda for Action
Knowledge management has become a strategic growth area; helping in building synergies and increased knowledge and information sharing. Arguably Networks and Communities of Practice are now the primary mechanism for moving knowledge and learning across traditional boundaries in global organisations like UNDP. Operating at country, regional and global levels, these communities have enabled teams of UNDP staff to interact closely in the development of new tools and methodologies to support UNDP work. The presence of such powerful knowledge and practice networks of over 8000 practitioners contributes directly to the growth and sustenance of CoPs. Communities focus on practical aspects of a practice, everyday problem, development in the practice and/or thematic area, new tools, things that work and don’t (lessons learned), good practices etc. Recognizing their value, the UNDP Strategic Plan (2008-11) included specific knowledge management related outputs, indicators and targets. The present guidance note attempts to identify some of the lessons learned and good practices to strengthen CoP processes.
  • Knowledge Café
Following the Knowledge Management participatory process and based on previous thematic discussions of the AC-CoP meeting (28-29 October 2008, Athens), the Anti-corruption Knowledge Cafe explored key UNDP AC-CoP challenges and identifies immediate and long-term solutions. The Knowledge Cafe proposed an ‘Agenda for Follow up Action’ with appropriate implementation modality for the members of the Anti-corruption Community of Practice. Details will be shared along with the final ACCoP Report. Please visit the site again for the detailed AC-CoP follow-up Agenda.
