Focus and Objectives

UNDP draws on a global network of Democratic Governance (DG) practitioners to provide timely and high-quality advice, expertise and know-how to policy makers and other partners in the countries where we operate – helping them pursue the best possible development solutions. The Democratic Governance Practice Network (DGP-Net) supports directly the practitioners, and, promotes local, national, regional and global knowledge sharing and application. It works as an internal, global exchange forum to inform more than 2300.

The DGP-Net is a dynamic networking initiative that supports, encourages and facilitates innovative collaboration, knowledge leadership and the integration of good practices into its members’ work. It primarily works as an internal, global exchange forum to inform governance practitioners of the new resources and activities in the practice; as a tool for sharing comparative experiences, and, lessons learned, and, as a platform to highlight emerging trends and substantive issues democratic governance and leadership. DGP-Net is an informal network that 'belongs' to its members, and has become the foundation for the knowledge sharing initiatives of the Democratic Governance practice. The DGP-Net works closely with global, regional and national colleagues in mainstreaming knowledge management in Democratic Governance. The network is moderated by A.H. Monjurul Kabir, Knowledge Management Specialist & DGP-Net Facilitator, and, Sylvie Babadjide Research Analyst.

Collaboration and Partnership

In the past, UNDP supported the establishment of partners networks based on the UNDP model through the DGP-Net. These networks include ACE (The Electoral Knowledge Network), iKnow (The International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics), and DPKO-Rule of Law Network. UNDP also supports the broader UN through HURITALK – the human-rights policy network, and the Capacity-Net. The DGP-Net routinely works with UNDP’s practice specific networks i.e., environment and energy, poverty reduction, HIV/AIDS etc. DGP-Net collaborates with several regional and global Sub-practice networks that explore more specific governance themes including gender, ICT for Development, Crisis Prevention and Recovery etc. In addition, DGP-net has broadened its resource base by linking with several sectoral, and, regional hubs of knowledge based in external agencies.

Membership

The DGPNet has developed over time into a network of 2300 members representing all of the thematic practices, groups, Regional Bureaux, Centers, and about 160 country offices. The network also has members from other UN agencies and international organizations. DGP-Net members play the critical role in shaping the capacity of the network to initiate and secure a pro-active knowledge-sharing environment for the organisations and its partners. As DGP-Net membership grows, the DG practice is being strengthened by greater network interactions, face-to-face community of practice events, and follow-up actions.
