SDNP Indicators of Success

Types of indicators of results (examples of specific indicators are indicated in brackets)

  • number of users \ types of organisations using network
  • numbers and types of transactions, by topic and by origin (national or international) carried out on network (examples: numbers of personal communications, academic enquiries, searches for economic and commercial information, searches for scientific \ research information)
  • utilisation of information (example: time sequence of surveys examine how information obtained through the network has been used and the impacts of its use)
  • satisfaction of users \ subscribers (example: questionnaires and interviews over time to determine the level of user satisfaction with information obtained through the network, with the quality of service provided by network managers, with the technical effectiveness of network operation)
  • value of benefits from information obtained through the network versus real cost of obtaining the information (examples: time sequence of surveys comparing financial costs and benefits of the network for commercial users, surveys comparing perceived benefits and financial costs for scientific and technical users)
  • impacts on decision making of information obtained through the network (example: time sequence of surveys of different types of users to determine how they make important decisions, and how their decision- making processes are affected over time by information obtained through the network)
  • impact of access fees on user demand
  • use of network to access information within the country versus international information sources (example: measure of how many local data bases \ types of databases are accessed through network compared with numbers of international data bases \ types of databases being accessed)
  • country-related information available \ accessible via the network (examples: number of local organisations \ types of organisations making databases available, measures of affordabiltiy of access to local data bases and quality of local data bases)
  • national network’s role in changing attitudes towards information (example: time sequence of interviews \ questionnaires examining network users’ perceptions of how information can and should be used)
  • value of the network for communication, within the country and between the country and the rest of the world (example: time sequence of surveys examining how the network is being used for communication at different geographic scales)
  • effect of the local SDNP steering committee on the national dialogue (example: time sequence of surveys examining perceptions of information and information sharing within member organisations)
  • links between Agenda 21 and network activities \ utilisation (example: survey of network's contribution to achieving national Agenda 21 goals)
